FULL NAME :   IMRE VARADI

Height : - .m  (' ")

Weight : -  - kgs    (st lbs)

Striker who had a long career with a large number of top flight clubs as well as teams in the lower divisions, could have worn the Lilywhite and Blue after he had a short spell with Spurs as a youngster.

Imre Varadi was with Luton Town as a junior, then went to play at Letchworth Town in the Isthmian League before he was taken on at Tottenham for three months, winning the SE Counties League Cup with the youth side in the time he was there.  A contemporary of Des Walker (another who got away), Hazard, Falco, Miller, Hughton and Brooke, he scored two goals in five games for Spurs, however, the striker wasn’t retained and could have joined Cambridge United under Ron Atkinson, but chose to play Sunday league football, as Letchworth did not want to take him back.

Worked as an asphalter until former Hatters boss Harry Haslam remembered him and signed him for Sheffield United in April 1978 at the age of 18.  From there, his career saw him take his goal-scoring boots to 14 league clubs although one of them saw him stay very long.  When at Leeds United, the team won the First division title, but as he had made only three appearances, it was not enough to be awarded a medal.  Imre was part of the Sheffield Wednesday side promoted to the First Division in 1984, but had the opposite experience, being relegated with West Bromwich Albion (1985-96), Manchester City (1986-87)  and with Sheffield Wednesday in his second spell (1989-90).

After many miles travelled, Varadi dropped into non-league with Matlock Town, where he was player-manager for two years.

Turned down the chance to play for the country of his ancestry - Hungary - and nowadays works on local radio in Sheffield and is a fully licensed FIFA football agent.
