Spurs saw off a Monaco side that showed little of their European heritage, as they succumbed to three first half Erik Lamela goals.  They grabbed one back in the second period, but Tom Carroll finished off a good win and a good group phase for Tottenham that saw them top the table.  As for the French side, it was the end of this season's European adventure for them, with Anderlecht beating Qarabag in the other group game to go through in second place.

Mauricio Pochettino used the game to rest some first team players and to blood some youngsters and to give match time to some returners from injury.  His selections worked well and gave Spurs a solidity and an energy that surprised Monaco, who needed a win to progress.

Early pressing saw Ben Davies win the ball after Clinton's pass was intercepted, with the ball going to Clinton N'Jie, who knocked it wide left to Davies again and his low pull back found Erik Lamela in loads of space inside the box ten yards out. His side foot finish left the keeper hopelessly stranded and the ball found the bottom corner of the net to give Spurs the lead with only one minute and fifty seconds gone.

Always wary of an early goal, as we had one out in Brussels against Anderlecht, Spurs were showing that they were going for a second, but Monaco started getting periods of possession. However, 15 minutes in, a header forward by Alderweireld, a flick on by Son and Lamela was through the middle. He picked out a shot with the inside of his foot and while it lacked great power, it bounced just in front of the keeper's dive to his left, the effort squirmed under him and found the same corner his first goal had.

It was almost 3-0 a minute later as Lamela delayed a pass through the middle of the Monaco defence to Heung-Min Son and although he knocked it past the keeper, the Korean was offside. Son also went close when Alderweireld headed on a corner and the number seven's volley hit the side netting with twenty minutes on the clock. A move from back to front involving Onomah, Lamela, N'Jie and then Carroll firing in a left foot shot that curled the wrong side of the post.

At the other end, a free-kick wasn't fully cleared by Carroll and Bakayoko drilled a shot that was deflected just wide by Trippier, with the corner being cleared out to Moutinho, but the Portuguese midfielder couldn't keep his volley down. Another free-kick gave Monaco the chance to threaten but Wallace's header was headed over the top.

Spurs were standing firm in defence and then went forward, with Onomah testing the keeper with a shot that was pawed wide. The corner was fired in low and Alderweireld got a touch on it, as Toulalan managed to block it for another corner. The same happened at the other end when Wimmer blocked Pasalic's drive and the ball looped up and over the bar, with Lloris keeping a close watch on where it was going.

There was a bit of shirt pulling at a Spurs corner, then El Shaarawy went over the ball onto Dier's ankle. The referee was failing to spot these incidents and there was a clearance from a corner that hit Bakayoko on the arm, with a possible penalty shout. The ref did book Wallace for kicking the ball away.

Son wasn't having the best of nights, as he blazed well over the bar with team-mates better placed, but when Clinton kicked the ball off a Monaco toe, Son played in Lamela to his right and his right foot buried a shot beyond Subasic into the same section of the net to complete his first Tottenham hat-trick from 20 yards out. At 3-0, the game appeared almmost over with just 37 minutes gone, as Tottenham's closing down put pressure on Monaco that they could not deal with. Soon after the goal, Lamela was back making a vital tackle to show that before appearing at the other end to lead a charge on the Monaco goal.

No chances were being taken with Dier and Nabil Bentaleb came on for the first game of his comeback from protracted injury lay-offs. Despite him shooting into a defender when he cold have laid the ball off to Son, little more happened before half-time.

At the start of the second half, Bentaleb was trying to be too clever and eventually got caught out, when he had to drag down an opponent. Play went on and Lemar dragged a shot wide, with the referee going back to book the Algerian midfielder for his rugby tackle. But Tottenham were happy to knock the ball about and the young players introduced into the side were all doing their jobs well and with confidence. A good piece of passing in the Monaco last third ended with Son pushing a short pass into Onomah just outside the six yard box and his first effort was thwarted and his second looked like it was going past Subasic, but the keeper managed to get a leg on the ball and it diverted it away for a corner.

Once again, Spurs failed to keep a clean sheet, when substitute Mbappe-Lottin fed the ball in and El Shaarawy shot from outside the box took as slight flick off Wimmer to send the ball past Lloris and into the same corner as Lamela's three goals. So, 3-1 with half an hour to play.

Dirar had a free header from a corner, but put it wide when he should have hit the target at the far post and Spurs needed to settle things down after Nacer Chadli had come on for Erik Lamela. The game seemed to be following a pattern of one team attacking then the other, but Tottenham were ceding possession to Monaco more readily. When they did string passes together, they looked to open up Monaco. A move from back to front saw Son take the ball on the edge of the D, turn his man and try to set up Ben Davies, who had continued his run, but it ran to N'Jie, who hit a low shot that Subasic managed to stick a leg out to prevent beating him.

Another free header for Wallace went amiss and Clinton broke away only for Toulalan to block his run and get booked, with Dirar's dissent earning him a yellow card too. He had a shot from a corner that Lloris reacted well to grab over his head, then a volley from Diarra at the far post from a corner bounced over the bar when it was shot into the ground.

With 77 minutes on the clock, Spurs launched a move that saw Son play the ball right to Clinton, who once more was denied by the keeper's foot, but when it broke to the edge of the box, Tom Carroll was first onto it and took it past a defender, who looked bemused by what he should do with the ball and then past another close to the dead ball line. With a very narrow angle, the midfielder stroked the ball under the keeper and into the net, with a goal similar to the one he got in the Audi Cup against AC Milan.

A long, long spell of possession brought a wildly high shot from Onomah from 22 yards out, but by then it didn't matter. Spurs were through as group winners as they saw out two minutes added time.

Of those coming in from injury, Bentaleb looked to show Pochettino what he could do, but almost undid the good work he had done, while Chadli looked off the pace and needing match practice. Wimmer was strong in the challenge and good on the ball, while Josh Onomah gave the attacks a lot of dynamic movement and closing down and Kieran Trippier played well at right back, always looking to get forward.

So, a successful first phase of Europa League action and Tottenham will avoid the teams dropping out of the Champions League and hopefully receive a favourable draw in the Round of 32.  Things will get tougher, but with this group of players, there is a strength in depth to chop and change as Mauricio deems necessary.
