It was one of those games of two halves, when Spurs should have wrapped up the points in the first 45 minutes, but as the game went on after the break, there looked only one winner and that wasn't us.  The 2-1 score-line and with the goal coming in the last minute to end our unbeaten run, was perhaps a little cruel, but the Geordies probably deserved it for their second half showing.

Tom Carroll had retained his place in the side after Thursday's Europa League display, while Dele Alli returned, along with a host of players rested against AS Monaco.  And it all looked promising in the first half, with Spurs closing down quickly and effectively, creating the odd chance here and there, but being denied by Rob Elliot in the Newcastle goal.  Initially, Kyle walker was ripping up the right wing, but after being left in a crumpled heap by a foul from Dummet, his attacking threat became limited.  However, with five minutes gone, the visitors could have taken the lead.  Moussa Sissoko played the ball in to the feet of Papiss Cisse and he laid it off to Siem de Jong around the D, but the Dutch striker's effort looked to be curling around Lloris, until it hit Cisse in front of goal to give Spurs a reprieve.

Alderweireld's use of the long diagonal ball from right to left saw Eriksen put Rose in behind Janmaat, but Danny's cross was way too deep.  Eric Dier had a sight of goal, but pulled his effort wide before Toby's ball deep into Newcastle territory picked out Alli's run, but he could not finish like last week at West Bromwich Albion and taking a touch allowed the defence to deny him a shooting opportunity.  Eriksen hit Wijnaldum with a shot, then put another shot wide, before Rose put a low cross across the six yard box, just ahead of Harry Kane's run.  The Magpies did have a chance when Cisse headed Dummet's cross wide, but Tottenham started to build pressure on the Newcastle goal.  A well worked move between Carroll and Rose allowed the left back to pull the ball back to Erik Lamela, who shot at goal from where he scored his first goal on Thursday, but Elliot flung himself to his left to push it wide for a corner.  A minute later, a flick on by Kane saw Lamela get to the ball as it dropped in the box, but his rising shot was helped over the bar by Elliot.  This only delayed the inevitable, but to score from a corner was unusual for Spurs.  Coming from the left wing, Eriksen played the ball in, beating the first man and finding Dier running onto it unmarked, powering the ball into the net from six yards out.

There was a great chance to double the lead before half-time, when Christian Eriksen had a shot from the edge of the box and it was deflected wide to the left, with Elliot grounded behind the defender.  Danny Rose came steaming onto it, but perhaps a little too quickly, as he drove the ball fiercely across the goalmouth, with neither Spurs players or Newcastle defenders able to get a touch on it.

I guess Tottenham hadn't wanted the first half to end, as they had dominated, but the break gave the visitors a chance to thrash things out and put them right.  Sissoko started to find space on their right wing, with Eriksen losing his effect on the game and leaving Rose exposed.  Two free-kicks on the edge of the box saw Christian hit the wall both times and a third was shot straight into the arms of a keeper falling forwards.  Newcastle began to threaten and a long cross from the right was knocked back into the goalmouth by Cisse for Wijnaldum to try and overhead kick, but Alderweireld got in the way, then Sissoko created a shooting chance for Cisse, but he pulled it wide across Lloris and the goal too. 

When a ball was played up to Kane on halfway, he held it up well and played it right to Kyle Walker.  The full back returned the bal and from about 30 yards out, Kane hit the ball sweetly, but again Elliot dived full length to tip it wide of the goal.  On the hour, Sissoko found space to lift a cross onto Cisse's head, but he lacked power in his effort, leaving a simple task for Lloris to gather the ball in.  De Jong made way for Ayoze Peres just after the hour and ten minutes later Mitrovic came on for Cisse.  With the two departing strikers never looking like scoring, these two couldn't be as bad ... and so it proved. 

Tottenham had a chance, when Eriksen hit Son's pass first time from 25 yards, but Elliot was on his way to the man of the match award with another stop low to his left.  At the other end, Rose was booked after he handled a cross just outside the area on the left side and the free-kick was played deep.  Coloccini headed it back into the box, where Mbemba threw himself at the ball to try and score, but it was blocked on the line, only for Mitrovic to force it over the line from a couple of feet out.  The Spurs players looked stunned and they had looked out on their feet.  Alli and Dier had given everything; Eriksen tired and Carroll had faded from the match until he was substituted.  Kane was battling alone up front and Lamela couldn't get the ball enough to make a difference.

Perez and Mitrovic had come on to rough up our central defenders and it was working.  Perez caught Vertonghen with a jump tackle, which perhaps should have been more than yellow, while Mitrovic was jumping into people as they went to head it with no eye for the ball.  Such a jump in added time saw the ball go through to Perez on the Newcastle right and out-muscling Vertonghen, the Toon striker hit a low shot from a tight angle on their right, which bounced and squeezed under Hugo to find the net and register the winner for the opposition.  It was a soft goal to give away, but Mitrovic had come close to scoring minutes earlier, when he just failed to get a touch yards out to Sissoko's low cross.

I am not sure that the performance deserved the boos at the end of the match and while it wasn't great, there was still a degree of dominance in the way Tottenham had played it, but the contrast between the performances in the two halves was marked and needs to be addressed.  Reacting to the change sin the way the game was going is also something for Poch to analyse.

So, the long unbeaten run ends and not to a team you might have imagined would do that, but they were the last team to win at the Lane in the Premier League and seem to have the sign over us at home at the moment.  For Tottenham, it is a lesson to be learned that you have to put teams away while you are on top, as even the teams near the bottom of the table can come back against you.  A week's rest before Tottenham travel to Pochettino's old side Southampton and there is a need to start a new run as quickly as possible.
