What looked a tricky FA Cup Third Round replay away at the team who have spent much of the season in top spot turned out to be a fairly straightforward mission for the shadow Spurs side that took on the much changed Leicester City side and won 2-0 to go through to the Fourth Round.

With both sides making changes to their regular line-up, it was not hard to see where this competition rated in their season's overall objectives.  Bentaleb came in for Alli and Walker, Wimmer and Dier joined Ben Davies to make up the back four in front of Michel Vorm.  Heung-Min Son was the lone striker, ahead of Eriksen, Lamela and Chadli as the attacking midfield three.

An early loose pass by Eric Dier gave the ball straight to Demarai Gray, but the defender made up for it by cutting out the Leicester winger's ball into the box. Possession seemed to be handed over by both sides in the first ten minutes and Bentaleb had it taken off his toe by Drinkwater, but the ball went to far ahead of him and Vorm came out of his area to hack clear. The reason the teams could not hang onto the ball was because both sides were closing down quickly and there was little space to operate in.

When Spurs did find some space down the left, Son pulled the ball back to Eriksen outside the area and from a position left of central, his shot avoided two blue shirts throwing themselves in front of him, but the ball went well wide. An intricate passing movement on the right almost found space for Son in the box, then two crosses into the danger area tested the Foxes' defence.

Ben Davies was booked for trying to tug Nathan Dyer's shorts off him, but the game ebbed and flowed without much real intent. Davies had a strike at goal from a corner pulled back by Eriksen, but it swerved away and over the goal. Leicester got a free-kick four yards outside the box directly in the centre of the pitch for a weak decision when Chilwell ran across Carroll and went down, but Inler got the ball over the wall, but it posed little trouble for Vorm to catch.

Leicester's fake atmosphere caused a lot of noise with their plastic happy clappers, but the true atmosphere came from the Spurs fans singing loudly despite being out-numbered. And out-numbered was what Spurs found themselves, with the centre of the pitch being highly congested. Ben Davies made a left wing run and swung in a cross, which was met by Erik Lamela, jumping above Chilwell, but he could not get over the ball and it flew over the bar.

Neither team was playing with any pace, perhaps a result of the numerous changes that they had made. With a simple pass, Tom Carroll opened up the home defence for Son to take a touch, shaped to go inside, then went outside Chilwell and fired an unstoppable shot that beat Schmeichel at his near post. The goal inspired Tottenham, although Ulloa broke and tried the same trick as Son, but hit the ball over Vorm's goal. Spurs were using the space on the right to torment Chilwell, with Walker playing in a fast cross to the far post that Chadli couldn't get to and then Son having a shot that was blocked out for a corner.

That was the last action of the half, with Wimmer getting to Eriksen's corner at the near post, but poking it wide. Son's striking ability created a yard running with the ball, with Chilwell not close enough to him and he made the most of the opening, with a drive that had too much power for the keeper.

Okazaki coming on for Drinkwater at the break meant a shift for Leicester to 4-4-2, but his introduction was intended to add more energy to the attack and more support for Ulloa. But carrying on from their 69% possession in the first half, Tottenham spent the first five minutes of the second period having the ball and mainly in the opposition's half, winning a couple of corners.

Bentaleb got in the way as Dier came to head out a high ball and the home team took possession and worked the ball left, from where Gray cut inside into the box and curled a shot around Walker, but Vorm was equal to it with a flying save. The ball went out to the side of the goal but Dyer couldn't hook the ball back towards goal and it went out for a goal kick. Spurs broke soon after, with Eriksen looking for a pass that Lamela played inside, but through to the keeper, with Son free on his left.

Leicester looked like they realised they needed to up their game and Ulloa nearly made his way past the last man, but the ball was cleared away.

The ever generous and knowledgeable Leicester crowd booed Harry Kane oh his entry into the game, when he replaced Lamela. He nearly made them pay when a quick break saw Eriksen play the ball to Son and he laid it in front of Harry to the right of goal, getting away an early shot as he forced Schmeichel to save at his near post. With Leicester breaking, they had three on two, but Dyer's ball ran through to Vorm. They were failing to hit the target and Spurs were not having that problem, as a throw-in on the left wing was given to Eriksen, who moved the ball on to Kane and then to Son. His clever reverse pass inside the unaware Wasilewski gave Chadli the chance to run onto the ball and slide his shot past Schmeichel, beaten once more at his near post. It was a well crafted move and a well finished opportunity.

A hopeful back flick from Ulloa to a low cross and a deflected free-kick off for a corner was Leicester's response. Tottenham's was a break to the left that Kane hit low at goal and the keeper actually got to this one and kept it out. Immediately, the Foxes brought on Vardy to much excitement among the home support, but it was soon the strains of “When The Spurs Go Marching On” that rang out across the silent expanses of the KP Nuts stadium … as well as less complimentary songs about the East Midlands side. When the olés came out for Tottenham's possession passing, the ignorant Leicester fans did they same when they won the ball back … instantly forgetting they were losing 0-2 and had to get back into the game rather than keep hold of the ball.

Tottenham looked happy to keep the ball, but hit on the break when they could, while Leicester were getting more physical, as that was the only way they could get the ball off them. Gray tried his luck from 25 yards but was too high, with Vardy hoping to get in when the ball bounced awkwardly for Dier, but the defender got back to block the England forward's half-hit shot.

Vorm made a good stop when Chilwell's long cross from the right was met on the volley, but the keeper scooped it out and Wimmer cleared. From a free-kick that earned Albrighton a booking in an eventful minute for him, Kane again brought Schmeichel into action with a fumbling save at his near post.

As Leicester piled forward Ulloa had a header from a long free-kick that might have been going over, but Vorm made sure and then Spurs defended well to keep a clean sheet and progress to meet Colchester United at the Weston Homes stadium.

The team played well and despite a few moments when it was clear players had not played together much this season, the team held up well and saw off Leicester with ease.  Kevin Wimmer looked at home, being duly untroubled without much to do, with the rest of the team playing well and Son showing his finishing ability, as did Nacer Chadli, who held the ball up well, but looked a little ring rusty.

Leicester were a shadow of their team that everyone is praising to the hilt.  Maybe they have hit the wall and the squad shows that the depth may not be there to mount much more of a challenge, but they only have the league to concentrate on ,so maybe they will get away with that.  While we don't have to play them again in the league, I hope that we might also outdo them come the end of the season, with other sides perhaps capitalising on their current lack of goals.
