On the opening day of the season, Spurs played
Reading in the Second Division at White Hart Lane.
Spurs fielded three new players – full backs Bert Hodgkinson and Albert
Lyons, along with centre-half Alf Messer, who was making his debut
against his old club and was made captain for the match.
Little did the crowd realise what they were about to see, as Ted Harper
scored all four of Tottenham's goals to make the score 4-0. Billy Cook
made it five, before Jimmy Dimmock scored with Harper finishing off the
scoring for Tottenham, who conceded a late consolation to Frank Eaton,
leaving the final score at 7-1 to Spurs.

A Third Round FA Cup tie
pitched Tottenham up against fellow Southern League rivals Reading at
Elm Park, where about 3,000 fans made the journey to support Spurs.
Ernie Watts out-ran the Spurs defenders in the
15th minute to provide a cross for Dick Evans to shoot home past George
Clawley. It was into the second half, with 52 minutes gone, when
Sandy Brown's effort was saved by Charlie Cotton and fell kindly for
John Kirwan to score with the rebound.
Six minutes from time, Tottenham escaped a
Reading penalty claim when a goal-bound shot was allegedly punched away
from under the bar by Sandy Tait, but the referee did not see the
incident.

Reading - Cotton, Henderson, Clinch, Bull, Mainman, Watts,
Evans, Logan, Pegg, Sharp, Barnes
Spurs - Clawley, Erentz, Tait, Morris, Hughes, Jones, Smith,
