The move for Hertha Berlin defender Gilberto was thought to have fallen through after a fee was agreed for the 31 year old Brazilian, but it was reported that he had failed a second medical at the club.  However, later in the evening, his transfer was completed by Spurs.  The club clarified that there was no problem with his medical, but he will only be available after his international clearance papers come through.

One late deal that went through was the transfer of Jermain Defoe to Portsmouth. With 18 months left on his contract, the club say that they have "reluctantly" allowed him to leave.

Glasgow Rangers full back Alan Hutton has once more been linked with a move to White Hart Lane, with Tottenham offering improved terms to him to go with the £8 million offer accepted by his club.  After travelling to London for talks yesterday, it appears that the Scot will stay with his club until the e summer, but the BBC site reckons Hutton might yet join Spurs in the summer.

The Daily Mirror claims that Aston Villa are poised to sign up winger Wayne Routledge.

It looks as though the negotiations to sign Jonathan Woodgate have broken down and now he looks set to join Newcastle United.  I would not be surprised if it was about the amount he was to be paid, as he currently gets £70,000 a week, which is a lot more than the pay structure at White Hart Lane.  However, later in the evening, Newcastle announced that they were unlikely to sign him and that he would be moving elsewhere, with Spurs the favourites to pick up the deal.
The Daily Mirror claims that Jermain Defoe will sign a new contract with Tottenham after Damien Comolli persuaded Juande Ramos to keep the little striker.  The three and a half year deal is likely to see him raise his pay to £40,000 a week and will include bonuses for games played and goals score, so the paper reveals.

  MEHSTG's spin story ...

Friday  25.01.2008   (For other Spurs history on this day click here; For the current news on each player in the squad, click here)

Spurs have been given permission to speak to Jonathan Woodgate after agreeing a fee, believed to be in the region of £7 million for the Middlesbrough central defender.  The 28 year old was heading for talks about personal terms, with the deal looking to go through in the next few days.
Paul Robinson has told the Daily Mirror that he feels that a lot of the criticism he has received over the last 12 months has been
over the top and many stories about him have been untrue.  He confirmed that he had not put in a transfer request, but that if he did not play between now and the end of the season, then he may have to reassess his situation, but he was doing his best in training to get back into the team and displace the manager's selection of Radek Cerny.  The Spurs keeper also added that he did not expect to be in Fabio Capello's first England squad as he is not playing for his club side.
Pascal Chimbonda has allegedly shown his love of Mammon by telling the Sun that he is going to join Newcastle United, as they have offered him more money than he is getting at White Hart Lane and that he didn't care about the League Cup final, as that was all he was interested in.  However, later in the day, his agent Willie McKay said that the comments were not true and that Chimbonda was committed to the club, with it having a "place in his heart" even if he did move on.
Reports on the Sky Sports website indicate
that the proposed transfer of Tiago from Juventus to Tottenham has broken down and other clubs are looking to bring the Portuguese midfielder to the Premier League.  Again, the story was refuted in later reports, with Tottenham still being the favourite to be the player's destination.
Glasgow Rangers manager Walter Smith has denied rumours that a deal has been struck with Tottenham to sign defender Alan Hutton in the summer.

Sky Sports website reports that Spurs are trying to bring Barcelona defender Carles Puyol to White Hart Lane.  .

Juande Ramos has admitted that if he could get David Albelda of Valencia on a free transfer, he would happily sign the midfielder.  The Daily Mail reports that the club are set to complete the signing of Tiago Mendes from Juventus and then follow it up with the purchases of Stewart Downing from Middlesbrough and Alan Hutton from Glasgow Rangers.  Kevin Keegan is hoping to snap up Middlesbrough central defender Jonathan Woodgate ahead of Tottenham, while Boro, Everton and Blackburn Rovers are all watching Paul Robinson's situation at White Hart Lane.  Tottenham and Manchester City are reported to be chasing the Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen of Sevilla,

Thanks to Malcolm Blazey (born in N17) for the following, which, as he says, in a week when the party at WHL just goes on and on, the news just keeps getting better.

You may or may not be aware that a "monoline" financial company (AMBAC Financial Group Inc of which AMBAC Assurance Limited is part) was downgraded in the US on Friday.  The implications are quite substantial and this was all part of the problem causing stock markets to fall sharply on Monday.  The knock-on effect of this is that this company insures long term bonds (paper issued to raise finance).  Any bonds insured by them are also at risk of being downgraded making life much more difficult for the owners and eventually the issuer.  What has all this to do with football ?

This press release from July 2006 explains it all.

LONDON, 27 July 2006 - AMBAC Assurance Limited (NUSE : ABK) announced today that it has guaranteed 100% of the 25-year £260 million public bond issued by Arsneal Securities plc with the proceeds being used to refinance the Emirates Stadium.  The Emirates Stadium is a new, state-of-the-art, 60,000 seat arena in North London and will be the new home of the Arsenal Football Club plc.  This is the first insured bond issued for a football club in Europe and is secured by the ticket revenue streams achieved by the stadium.

Oh, dear !!  Things seemed to be going a bit pear-shaped.  Next thing, they will be telling us it isn't the main company ... it was just the reserves !!

Spurs are set to sign Brazilian 31 year old utility player and left sided defender Gilberto De Silva from Hertha Berlin for around £2.5 million and the Times now report that Juande Ramos wants to keep Jermain Defoe at the club, despite rumours of a move to Aston Villa beginning to gather pace.  On Saturday, Defoe said that the rumours of Ramos telling him he could go were not true and that he told the striker that he wants him to stay at the club and win things.  Queens Park Rangers want to expend some of their big piles of cash by taking Radek Cerny and Tomas Pekhart on loan from Tottenham.  This is an odd move, as Cerny is not a Spurs player, but is on loan from Slavia Prague at White Hart Lane.  It appears that the players' agent has been touting the move, with Pekhart's being a six month loan with the option of a permanent move at the end of it.  I'm not sure there would be much to the striker's move, as he is highly rated at Tottenham.

The Sunday Mirror claim that Newcastle United and Manchester United are both willing to do battle for Dimitar Berbatov, that the Tiago deal will go through for £9.5 million and that the Le Mans 25 year old Yohann Pele is the man they see as Paul Robinson's replacement on goal (with Glasgow Celtic, Manchester United and Arsenal all having enquired about the keeper, but were quoted £13 million), while the News of the World reckon Everton want Stewart Downing from Middlesbrough, although Spurs are still interested, despite recent reports that it is Damien Comolli who is keener on the winger than Juande Ramos.  The Mirror claim that if Spurs go cold on Downing, who wants to stay with Boro until their Premier League status is secure, then they might turn to Blackburn Rovers' Norwegian winger Morten Gamst Pedersen.  He would cost £8 million, while the paper suggests that if Spurs lose Berbatov, they will be back at Ewood Park to try and tempt Roque Santa Cruz away from Rovers.  The Sunday People run two Spurs stories ... Sven Goran Eriksson wants to take keeper Paul Robinson to Eastlands, while Kevin Keegan wants Pascal Chimbonda to fill Newcastle United's right back slot.  Other ludicrous Newcastle United rumours in the wake of the desperate appointment of Kevin Keegan include bids for Ledley King and former Spurs midfielder Michael Carrick.  The Sunday Mail in Scotland reckon that Tottenham will make a third attempt to sign Alan Hutton from Glasgow Rangers.

The Sun reckon that Jermain Defoe wants to get away with the lads at Newcastle United now that Kevin Keegan is in charge at St. James Park.  The Spurs striker's reported presence at Aston Villa's training ground has been dismissed by manager Martin O'Neill.  The Olympique Lyonnais chairman, Michael Aulas has said that Fred might still yet leave his club, despite yesterday's proclamation that he wants to stay at with the Ligue 1 club.  With Martin Laursen, a rumoured intended Spurs target, signing a new contract at Aston Villa, the Midlands club are looking to boost their defence by buying Pascal Chimbonda from Tottenham.  The Sun reckons Ramos will return to Seville to take Russian striker Alexander Kerzhakhov from his former club.  To clarify things, Sporting Director Damien Comolli said on the club's website that there is no intention to sell Darren Bent this transfer window and that the club are not seeking to bring in any forwards.  Sky Sports website claim that Tottenham are closing in on a three and a half year deal for 26 year old Portuguese international Tiago, who is set to leave Juventus.  The former Chelsea midfielder has also attracted interest from Portsmouth, Atletico Madrid and Newcastle United.

Newspaper reports indicate that Spurs might be ready to sell Paul Robinson for £5 million according to the Independent, as he demanded a move after being left out of Wednesday's League Cup semi-final first leg game at Highbury, the Daily Mail say.  The Sun claim that Spurs will move for West Ham United keeper Robert Green, who will cost them £6 million.  Olympique Lyonnais have said that they have received bids from clubs such as Portsmouth, Paris St. Germain and another club, believed by the papers to be Spurs, who have the biggest bid at £11 million for the 24 year old Fred and the club are leaving it to him to decide which team he wants to join.  A number of sources reckon Spurs are close to sealing a transfer to White Hart Lane for Middlesbrough left winger Stewart Downing, for anywhere between £8 million and £10 million plus Teemu Tainio heading to Teesside.

Tottenham's away leg in the Round of 32 tie against Slavia Prague has been moved from Wednesday 13th February to Thursday 14th February, kicking off at 9:00 p.m. Prague time.
Differing views over Paul Robinson's future at Tottenham abound in the papers today, with some claiming he will be on his way out after a dressing room bust-up with Juande Ramos just moments before the game last night, when he found out that he had been dropped.  Other sources report that Ramos has said that the England keeper does have a future at the club and the only reason that Radek Cerny was playing last night was to give a squad member an opportunity of a game.
At last there is some movement in the transfer window, with full back Phil Ifil joining Colchester United for an undisclosed fee, believed to be over £350,000 if certain conditions are met.  Also, goalkeeper David Button has gone on loan to Grays Athletic for a month.
Pascal Chimbonda's agent, yes him again, has told the Press that the full back would be happy to make a switch to Villa Park, as he has been told that he will not be part of Juande Ramos' future for the club.  Martin O'Neill, the Villa boss, is considering a £15 million offer for Chimbonda and Jermain Defoe.  A number of papers report that Tottenham will have talks with Olympique Lyonnais' striker Fred, who might cost £11 million, as a possible replacement for Dimitar Berbatov, should he leave the club.  Middlesbrough are having talks with the Brazilian before he heads for discussions with Spurs and our club is also being linked with a move for Boro left winger Stewart Downing (again), although his club say there has been no contact.  Later in the day, the Sky Sports website claimed that Spurs had dropped out of the talks with Fred over financial demands, leaving Paris St. Germain and Boro to fight over him.  Toulouse have revealed that Spurs have contacted them about their Swedish international forward Johan Elmander.  Apparently, just before leaving the club, Sam Allardyce agreed a £5.5 million fee fro Arsenal midfielder Lassana Diarra and the player is holding fire on the move, as he wants to see if Tottenham will match the Geordie's bid.  Internazionale has withdrawn any interest in former Chelsea and Portugal midfielder Maniche, leaving Spurs in prime position if they wish to move for the 30 year old Atletico Madrid, so say the Daily Mirror.

The Sun reports that Juande Ramos has received a writ from Seville demanding £2.2 million.

Dimitar Berbatov has been named as the Bulgarian Player of the Year for the fourth time.

Spurs Youth progressed to the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup with a 2-1 win over Chester City at White Hart Lane tonight.  The goals came from Danny Rose and a David Hutton penalty.
Jermain Defoe has revealed that Juande Ramos has told him that he can leave the club if he wishes.  The striker was expecting to be told that he was starting against Arsenal in the League Cup semi-final, but was shocked when given the news.  However, he said he has never stated he wanted to leave the club and will stay and fight for his place because he loves it at White Hart Lane.  Aston Villa are believed to want to offer him an escape route should he require one.
Rumours surrounding a further Tottenham move for Glasgow Rangers defender Alan Hutton are circulating.  Having turned Spurs down, the story goes that the club have returned
with an improved financial package for the full back and he is considering it.  However, the news on the BBC website says that Tottenham have stated they have no further interest in the player and Rangers manager Walter Smith said he knew nothing about the new offer.  The Times say that the Scottish club want Hutton to go, but others say he will once more frustrate Spurs' efforts to tempt him South.  The Daily Telegraph catches up with the weekend's news by saying that Ramos will make Tal Ben Haim of Chelsea his first signing for £8 million, while he is considering a £9 million move for midfielder Tiago of Juventus.  Apparently, Edgar Davids has given the benefit of his experience at Tottenham to full back Urby Emanuelson and told him that he is a talented player who only needs to go to the top clubs in England, Italy or Spain ... so he might as well forget joining Spurs.  Bitter or what ??  Out of contract in the summer, Aston Villa's 30 year old Danish defender Martin Laursen has said he would be interested in a move to Spurs or Newcastle United if they wanted him.
If Tottenham progress to the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, their tie with Manchester United will be televised on BBC 1 on Sunday 27th

Dimitar Berbatov has come out and said that he is annoyed about comments about his future being made and quotes that are attributed to him that he has not made.  The Bulgarian striker said it was starting to affect his game and he just wanted to play football and win things with Tottenham.  He believes that can be achieved at Spurs and rates Juande Ramos as a good man and a good coach, who can see details that others cannot see.  Dimitar also said he is not worth the sums of money being linked with a potential transfer away from White Hart Lane.
Spurs have been drawn away to Manchester United in the FA Cup Fourth Round, should they get past Reading in the Third Round replay.

The Sun claim that Ramos wants to buy Chelsea's Israeli defender Tal Ben Haim for £8 million !!  Is he sure ??  The Times seem to think that Spurs will be back in for Alan Hutton, believing they can somehow persuade him that an £8 million transfer is the right move for him, although that was what he turned down last week.  Pascal Chimbonda might be on his way out of the club after he is reported to have laughed when asked to play in central defence and with Chris Gunter signed and rumours linking Spurs with Hutton and other right sided defenders, he is getting a bit worried.  Well that's what the Daily Mail say.  Not worried enough to be thinking that if Spurs offered him the right contract that he would sign it, TeamTalk tell us.  Chelsea and Spurs are keen on Barcelona's former Juventus defender Gianluca Zambrotta, the Times tell us, as well as Spurs going in for Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson, who they offered £1 million for two years ago.   Manchester City have said that money is no object in their quest to lure Dimitar Berbatov away from Tottenham, the Sun says, while the Mirror continues with news of the attraction Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish has for Anthony Gardner.

Manchester United are making Dimitar Berbatov their main transfer target, but do not want to be held to ransom by Spurs, so says the Mail on Sunday, but the Sunday Express claims that Tottenham have already lined up Toulouse striker Johan Elmander as his replacement.  Other papers claim Chelsea will bid £32 million for the Bulgarian and Manchester United will offer us all sorts of player + cash deals for the forward.  The People reckon the Chelsea deal is supposed to be ready to go through in January and the money is to be paid up front, leaving Juande Ramos with a huge pot of money to spend, with Elmander and David Villa of Valencia lined up.  However, the News of the World reports that an "insider" at the club has revealed that Berbatov had better get used to White Hart Lane, as Daniel Levy has no intention of letting him go this transfer window and having signed a four year deal with a two year option that Spurs can trigger, they have no need to sell him, especially as there is a healthy set of books showing the money is not what is needed.  Also on the striker front, the same newspaper reveals that Jermain Defoe is set to sign a new five year deal at the club, which would effectively double his salary.  The Express also claim that if talks do not progress at Middlesbrough about Stuart Downing's contract, the Teesside club might sell him, with Everton and Spurs leading the chase for the winger.  Tottenham have asked QPR to double their £1.5 million bid for Wayne Routledge.  The News of the World list the players due in the January clear-out at the lane including Hossam Ghaly (who the People claim is having work permit trouble in his move to Derby County), Paul Stalteri (who might go back to the German Bundesliga) and Wayne Routledge, who interests his old club Crystal Palace.  West Ham United want to take Darren Bent on loan for the rest of this season, but they are likely to be unlucky with their wish according to the People.  The Observer has Spurs looking to Lyon for a new striker, with Fred an option at £9 million, as he is out of favour at the French club, partly because the other new sensation Karim Benzema has ousted the tall Brazilian and Tottenham are also keen on the 20 year old.  The broadsheet also claims that Spurs will move for former Liverpool forward Djibril Cisse of Marseille, but Portsmouth, Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City are also watching the man who had two broken legs while at Anfield.  The Sunday Mirror says that both Spurs and West Ham United are looking at former Chelsea midfielder Tiago Mendes, now with Juventus, where the Portuguese player has failed to make an impression.  Middlesbrough are said in the News of the World to contest the signing of Atletico Madrid's Portuguese midfielder Maniche with Spurs.
As a result of yesterday's draw in the FA Cup, the replay will be at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday 15th January with a 8:00 p.m. kick off, while Tottenham's away match against Chelsea next week will now revert to it's original date of Saturday 12th January.

Spurs were being linked to a move for 23 year old Glasgow Rangers full back Alan Hutton, with talks going on between the two clubs about a fee of £8 million, but later in the day, news broke that the Scot had decided not to make the move in the January transfer window.  Whether this means he will move at a later stage or whether he is hanging out for a move to Manchester United, we will wait and see.
The Independent reports that Tottenham have issued Jermain Defoe an ultimatum to sign a new contract or to be sold within the next month.  Meanwhile, the Dimitar Berbatov saga drags on with Manchester United and Chelsea both linked today, while Juande Ramos was realistic enough to state that every player has his price, which he thought would be more than the British transfer record of £30 million.  The Daily Mirror reckon that Derby County boss Paul Jewell wants to sign midfielder Hossam Ghaly on loan to help fight relegation, while Tottenham are still being linked with a £24 million move for Valencia's David Villa.  Another story, this time in the Daily Telegraph indicates that both Spurs and Manchester City will be disappointed as Toulouse have said that Swedish striker Johan Elmander is not for sale.  Lazio's Macedonian striker Goran Pandev has issued a come and get me plea to Spurs, Liverpool and Everton as the three Premier League sides he would like to play for.
