March 2005

Thursday  31.03.2005   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Spurs announced a £1 million rise in profits on last year's total in the six months trading to December 2004.  There was a decrease in turnover, down from £33.2m to £32.9m.  The operating profit was £5million, prior to player trading in which there was a £2.2m profit on transfer dealings, but a rise in player amortisation to £5.9m reduced the profit.  TV income dropped by £0.5m to £10.3m, while raising £15m via the share issue reduced the club's debt from £17.1m to £9.3m.
Announcing the results, when interviewed, Daniel Levy praised David Beckham and did not rule out a move for the Real Madrid midfielder.  Martin Jol, however, feels that he has two good players in that position already and that he might not need another, but while Beckham is at Real Madrid, the Spurs coach is not thinking about signing him.
The financial report appears to back up the claim that Tottenham would not pay former Head Coach Jacques Santini a settlement on his departure.
Among the financial rhetoric, there was a mention of a pre-season friendly against FC Porto at White Hart Lane on August 6th.
Dean Richards is seeking a £2 million pay-off from the Norwich Union insurance company after being forced to retire because he might have suffered a brain haemorrhage had he played on.  The central defender was set to leave Tottenham after his contract expired this summer, but Richards is claiming that he could have played on at the top level for five years if he had not had to stop playing on medical advice.
Martin Jol believes that Mark van Bommel will choose Barcelona over Tottenham when it comes to deciding where he will spend his future on leaving PSV Eindhoven.
Jol also denied speculation in the newspapers linking Tottenham with four or five players, including Tomas Rosicky, who he said the club have no interest in.
Thimothee Atouba has denied FA charges that he elbowed Joey Barton in the recent match against Manchester City and could face a three-match ban if found guilty.
