Friday   27.08.2004   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

The Daily Mirror today links former Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle with a return to SCBC as Director of Football, but hints that if Steve Wigley does not get success with the team, Hoddle will be asked to step into the manager's job.
The article also claims that the New Dell will welcome Fredi Kanoute as a sop to deflect any fan reaction to the return of Hoddle, who left under acrimonious circumstances to take over at Tottenham.  The piece quotes a price of £8 million and the move is said to be on, whether James Beattie leaves or not.  Funnily enough, £8 million is what SCBC are asking for Beattie, so is a swap on the cards ??
Kanoute does seem to be in demand at the moment, as AS Monaco are also after the Spurs striker.  They are desperately seeking a forward and although they have identified Kanoute as an option may get knocked back in any attempt to sign him.  The French side might now move for Barcelona's Javier Saviola on a loan deal.
TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS : -  Michael Carrick is set to make his Spurs debut at some stage tomorrow.  Jermain Defoe might be rested for the match because of his hectic schedule over the last fortnight, while Thimothee Atouba has been undergoing treatment for a knee injury.
BIRMINGHAM CITY TEAM NEWS : -  Darren Anderton is not rated match-fit, but might be thrown into the Birmingham side for this match, as Emile Heskey and Clinton Morrison are both rated unlikely with injury.  Robbie Savage's video panel inflicted suspension rules him out and David Dunn, Stan Lazaridis and Jamie Clapham all miss the match with injuries.
Spurs are being linked with an interest in Coventry City's England Under-21 central defender Calum Davenport, along with Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and SCBC.
Mark Yeates loan move to Swindon Town for one month has been confirmed by Spurs' official website.
The visit of Manchester United will be on Saturday 25th September.  The club attempted to move the fixture to allow many Jewish fans to attend, as it falls on the holy day of Yom Kippur, but the Champions League draw has provided United with a home tie on the Tuesday following our game and so they have to play it on the Saturday.
Nottingham Forest manager Joe Kinnear has indicated that any deal to bring winger Andy Reid to Spurs appears to be out of the question.  He claims that the £5 million fee was set and although Tottenham have been offering everything (including the kitchen sink), Kinnear said Spurs have not come up with the money.
Spurs transfer target Morten Gamst Pedersen has signed for Blackburn Rovers for £2.5 million.

Tottenham are being linked with a £6 million move for Argentina and Boca Juniors attacking midfielder Oscar Tevez.  The young goal-scorer has caught the eye at the Olympics and Spurs are hoping to seal a deal before transfer deadline day.  It is reported that Boca will hold out for £10 million, which might see Spurs drop out of the running.
It is rumoured that Andy Reid's omission from the Nottingham Forest line-up in last night's Carling Cup tie means he is on his way to Spurs, but Forest want to take Michael Brown in part-exchange for the Irish winger.
Joe Kinnear has also said that he is keen to bring Johnnie Jackson to Forest, either on loan or permanently.  The former Spurs player said he had talked at length with Chris Hughton and seemed optimistic that some deal could be done.  Maybe Jacko will be the make-weight in any deal for Reid then ??
Spurs and West Bromwich Albion are both said to be interested in Anderlecht striker Aruna Dindane.  While some reports say that he was watched coring twice in the Belgian side's win over Benfica in the Champions League and therefore, he will not be leaving, others say that he has told Anderlecht that he wants to go and they will not stand in his way if a £6 million offer came in.
Mark Yeates is the young player who will be joining Swindon Town on loan as part of the deal to bring Leigh Mills to Spurs, with some reports saying that it might be with a view to a permanent transfer.

Michael Carrick completed his move to Tottenham for a fee between £2.5 million and £3.5 million.  The former West Ham United midfielder said he is looking forward to the new challenge after his first transfer and hoped that his career will move on now that he is back in the Premier League.  Carrick said he was impressed by the squad assembled at the Lane and new a lot of the players and the area, so it would not be a big upheaval for him, but most of all he was looking to learn more form the new set-up with Spurs management and their training techniques to push himself into the England squad like some of his new colleagues.  Having had the interest by Arsenal terminated, he says in the London Evening Standard that he wants to show them what they are missing.  Michael Carrick takes the cursed squad number 23, but let's not hold that against him.
Spurs also completed the signing of the Nice right back Noe Pamarot, who joins for £1.7 million.  Having spent some time with Portsmouth in 1999-2000, he felt that the club did not help him through his time on the South Coast, when as a youngster he needed some back-up and he has said he wants to show Portsmouth what he is capable of.
Sky Sports claim that Tottenham have made an enquiry with Ajax about temperamental midfielder Wesley Sneijders.  The Dutch international is not a first choice under Ronald Koeman and Frank Arnesen is rumoured to have spoken to old friend Louis van Gaal about the winger, although he might have been told highly rated Sneijders is not for sale.

Robbie Savage's elbow to the head of Mateja Kezman in Saturday's match with Chelsea has earned him a three match ban after the matter was reviewed on video.  The Birmingham City midfielder will start his ban straight away and thus will be ruled out of the game against Spurs on Saturday.

The London Evening Standard claim that Tottenham have sent Frank Arnesen out to Germany to discuss a £7 million transfer for Owen Hargreaves.  The England midfielder has said that he wants to move to England, where his family hail from, but he was expected to go to Arsenal until Bayern put a £7 million price on his head.  However, with money available from the sale of Vieira and the need for a replacement, do not be surprised if the Gooners re-enter the chase for the 23 year old.

Spurs are to turn to Liverpool's right back Steve Finnan if their interest in Manchester City's Shaun Wright-Phillips does not succeed.  His former club Fulham and Blackburn Rovers have been watching his situation, but a move to Spurs to replace his Republic of Ireland right back rival might appeal to him.
Aston Villa's move for SCBC's centre forward James Beattie is the subject of a story in the Daily Mail, where they report that Tottenham match the Midlands club's offer of £6 million and add Frederic Kanoute into the deal to bring it up to £8 million.

Spurs have agreed a £2 million fee with Newcastle United for Stephen Carr.  The right back had one year left on his contract and although Frank Arnesen said he did not want to lose the player, he respected his decision to move on.  Carr will complete his medical and sign within the next 48 hours.
Reports that Spurs have been in negotiations with Danny Murphy today proved to be true, but those discussions broke down, with the official site announcing that the player wanted a guaranteed first team place, which it appears Spurs would not give him.
It has been reported today that Spurs made two bids last week for Manchester City's pacy winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.  An initial £.5 million offer was knocked back and Spurs returned with a £5.5 million bid, which was also rejected.  Manchester City have once more come out and said they do not wish to sell the player, but with large debts and Wright-Phillips not yet signing an extension to his contract, the move might come about should they need the cash.
Tottenham are being linked with a move for Juventus' Croatian central defender or midfielder Igor Tudor.  The 26 year old has been hit with injury, but played for his country at Euro 2004 and is seen as the ideal partner to play alongside Ledley King.  Reports in Italy claim that the player is heading for the Premier League, but the two clubs do not appear to have agreed a fee according to Sky Sports website.
