Once again, Bill Nicholson has been overlooked in the New Year's Honours List.
Tottenham are today being linked with a move for Auxerre's 30 year old striker Christian Dugarry, who also interests Birmingham City and Manchester City.
One website says that David Pleat is keeping his eye on the Wigan Athletic striker Nathan Ellington.  The former Bristol Rovers forward could be the subject of a £3 million bid, which his club might find hard to resist.

Monday  30.12.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Glenn Hoddle has criticised his players for not concentrating on the game, when arguing about the throw-in that lead to Newcastle United's second goal.  He said that if Spurs give goals away like that then they will struggle.
The Tottenham boss also told of the operation on Christian Ziege's muscle decompartmentalisation condition, which probably saved his leg and his career.  The blood built up within the muscle and it was necessary to bleed the affected part before complications set in.  He has a 10 inch wound where the surgeons had to cut his right leg open to save it and a couple of hours delay and they may have had to amputate it.  All at MEHSTG wish Christian a speedy recovery to full health.
TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS : - Les Ferdinand will begin his three match ban for a sending off in the reserves and will not be available for the Southampton matches.  Christian Ziege will be out for three months at least after his serious injury.  Teddy might return up front, with Dean Richards winning his battle to overcome his Achilles tendon problem.  Darren Anderton still has 'flu and will miss out.
Possible squad - Keller, Carr, King, Richards, Taricco, Bunjevcevic, Poyet, Freund, Sheringham, Keane, Iversen, Davies, Perry, Acimovic, Clemence, Ferdinand, Thatcher, Sullivan.

The London Evening Standard claim that Tottenham will return to bid for Fernando Morientes of Real Madrid on loan, when the transfer window opens in January.  The deal could be conditional on Spurs reducing the wage bill by offloading some players.

Christian Ziege has shocked Spurs by revealing that he has a serious leg injury that could keep him out for 11 weeks.  What he thought was a dead leg in the Charlton Athletic match on Boxing Day gave him pain and on consulting a doctor, he had to undergo two operations to relieve a build up of blood in his thigh.
Manchester United are supposedly planning an £8 million offer for midfielder Simon Davies, when the transfer window opens next week, according to the News of the World.
Les Ferdinand is finalising a loan deal at West Ham United until the end of the season, the News of the World informs us.
The same paper also carries a story that The Irons want to take Tim Sherwood to Upton Park on a one year deal, but he is holding out for a longer contract with either them or Portsmouth.
Former Spurs transfer target, Bolton Wanderers striker Michael Ricketts is said to be available for just £2.5 million, just a few months after the Trotters wanting £10 million for him.  The News of the World states that there have been no interested parties contacting Bolton about the big forward.
Stories are being carried in the media today about the transfer rumours surrounding Stephen Carr and a move to Arsenal.  David Pleat has been quoted as saying that the defender has two and a half years left on his contract and that his future lies with Tottenham.  This is a regurgitation of Pleat's programme comments from Wednesday.
In a Sunday Times interview, Teddy Sheringham said that he fears that white boys might have a harder time breaking into the game as black players are taller, stronger and quicker.  He told the broadsheet that their physique has made the game more exciting with their skill and athleticism, but his son, who could consider being a footballer, would have to be better than him to make it at the top level.  Sheringham also said he had not really thought about going into management when his career is over, but as he knows little else, it would be the logical step.  Whether he could make the changes necessary while looking on from the sidelines, he was not sure, but he said he was able to notice things on the field.
The Sunday People reckon that Teddy is going into the catering trade though, with an alleged £650,000 invested in a Hertfordshire wine bar and bistro.
Tottenham have reportedly sent scouts to watch the Brentford pair of goalkeeper Paul Smith and striker Kevin O'Connor.

Saturday  28.12.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

AC Milan and Brazil defender Roque Junior is likely to be loaned out for the remainder of the season to regain fitness after missing a portion of the season with a shoulder injury.  Although he is physically fit, he cannot displace Maldini and Nesta in the heart of the Rossoneri defence and Spurs and Real Madrid are keen to take him on when the transfer window opens according to Planet Football.
The Guardian newspaper is saying that Tottenham are going to forget about ground-sharing with Arsenal following a deluge of letters, telephone calls and e-mails about the idea from irate fans.  It is believed that they will now concentrate on asking the fans where they want to go should the ground improvements be decided against.

Friday  27.12.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Following on from Christian Ziege's second dismissal in as many matches, Glenn Hoddle is asking for referees to take time over their decisions when it involves bookings.  He cited the example of rugby, where refs can consult their linesmen, giving them an alternative opinion and also more time to compose themselves without rushing in to a card that may not have been necessary.
TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS : - Dean Richards is only rated as 50-50 to recover form his Achilles injury to be fit for the visit to Newcastle United on Sunday.  However, Christian Ziege is ready to play after suffering a dead leg in the Boxing Day game against Charlton Athletic.
Possible squad : Keller, Carr, Perry, King, Bunjevcevic, Ziege, Anderton, Freund, Poyet, Sheringham, Keane, Davies, Iversen, Taricco, Richards, Clemence, Doherty, Sullivan.
NEWCASTLE TEAM NEWS : - Craig Bellamy should be back in the side after he asked to be left out as he is coming back from a knee injury.  Oliver Bernard could also return, but Hugo Viana and Titus Bramble definitely miss out.
Possible squad : Given, Harper, Griffin, Hughes, Bernard, O'Brien, S Caldwell, Dabizas, Speed, Dyer, Robert, Solano, Jenas, Acuna, Kerr, Shearer, Bellamy, Ameobi, LuaLua.
Les Ferdinand has said that he wants to play more football than he is playing at the moment and if that means leaving in the January transfer window then so be it.  The striker told the London Evening Standard that if Tottenham will let him leave he will be happy to move on, with West ham United apparently the favourites to sign the veteran forward.  If he does leave Tottenham he still has a three match ban to serve for violent conduct in a reserve match against Arsenal.

Tuesday  24.12.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Glenn Hoddle said that Christian Ziege was silly to pick up the two yellow cards at Manchester City last night and has to take responsibility for them.  He did say that the referee could have used his common sense in the second caution.  Meanwhile, Ziege said he did not kick the ball away for the first offence, as he was passing to Steffen Iversen and did not hear the whistle.  He did say that he was at fault for the second one though.
TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS : -  Teddy Sheringham misses the London derby with a knee injury picked up in training.  Those who could play include Gary Doherty, who is recovering from a knee injury, throat virus victim Mauricio Taricco and Les Ferdinand (toe injury).

Juventus' Chilean striker Marcelo Salas has said that rumours linking him with a move to Tottenham and Barcelona are simply that - rumours, but he would like to play in England in the future, thus hinting a move to the Premiership might take precedence over Barca.  However, his indication was that he would not move until the summer.
Great unconfirmed rumour of the day is Christian Ziege to Barcelona !!

Another Italian based player that Tottenham are supposedly interested in is Luigi Di Biagio. The 31 year old Internazionale midfielder is also being tracked by Fulham and he seems unlikely to leave as he has been a fixture in his side's rise to the top of Serie A.
Yesterday's Sunday Mirror states that the FA Compliance officer will interview Glenn Hoddle and Daniel Levy about the transfer of Goran Bunjevcevic and the failed bid for AC Milan's Jose Chamot.  Both deals involved agent Dennis Roach and the spectre of bungs raises it's head once again.

The Daily Express carries a story today stating that should Tottenham get a bid of £9 million for midfielder Simon Davies, they may sell him.  It says that given the right price, Spurs might sell the Welsh international and Manchester United, Newcastle United and Liverpool have all been interested in his services.  Another story also links Barcelona and Atletico Madrid with interests in the player.
The FA have decided not to take any further action over Robbie Keane's goal celebration against West Bromwich Albion.  He was being looked at for inciting the opposition's fans by doing his cartwheel in front of them.
MANCHESTER CITY TEAM NEWS : -  Steve Howey has been passed fit for Monday's match.  Ali Benarbia will be vying for a place in midfield, but strikers Jonathan Macken and Paolo Wanchope both sit the match out with injuries.
Glenn Hoddle has said that despite the fact that everyone is saying that Les Ferdinand has played his last game for the club, they might be surprised.  With a hectic Christmas schedule starting on Monday at Manchester City, the Spurs boss might need another striker available for the five games between then and the first week of January.
Tim Sherwood has hit out at suggestions that Tottenham and Arsenal should share a ground.  He said that he would be against it even though it has worked elsewhere, like Milan.
Former Spurs defender, Ian Hendon, will leave Sheffield Wednesday at the start of next week for a loan spell under former manager Peter Shreeves at Barnet.

Thursday  19.12.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

The London Evening Standard are reporting that Spurs and Arsenal have both been approached independently to discuss the sharing of Wembley Stadium.  There is £120 million of National Lottery money being put towards the redevelopment of the national stadium and that would have to be paid back in the event of a club side sharing the facility.  The FA have initiated the talks and the thought is that they are keen to have at least one club to share the running costs of the £757 million stadium.
The Daily Express have re-run the story about Cardiff City being willing to put up £1 million for Gary Doherty, who they say is frustrated at the lack of first team opportunities at White Hart Lane.
Dennis Wise has praised Glenn Hoddle for the change he made in the regime at Chelsea that has now lead to a successful side.  The Millwall player was captain under the manager when he first arrived at Stamford Bridge and says that Hoddle is not given sufficient credit for making the Chelsea team re-think their approach and that is now bearing fruit.
Samuel Eto'o's agent has said that the Cameroon striker thinks it is the right time for him to move to the Premiership and believes that the money side, which held up a potential deal last time, has been resolved with the Real Mallorca chairman.  However, they are not yet ready to let him go and might hold on until the summer.
Montpelier's financial situation and Tottenham's strong interest in Bertrand Robert, might mean he comes to Spurs sooner rather than later.  The 18 year old striker is keen to come to the premiership after hearing all about it from his older brother  Newcastle United's Laurent Robert.
Former Spurs defender Dean Austin, now a non-contract player with non-league Woking, is thinking over an offer from Southend United to play on a short term deal over Christmas.

Wednesday  18.12.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Reports are being made that Lee Bowyer's move to Tottenham on a Bosman at the end of the current season has already been agreed.  However, a report in the London Evening Standard states that all the London clubs he has been offered to have declined, including Tottenham.
Les Ferdinand's sending off against Arsenal reserves has earned him a three game ban, which was confirmed by the FA today.  The suspension will start on December 30th and so he will miss the first team matches at Southampton in the Premier League and in the FA Cup as well as the home match against Everton.
Forgotten midfielder Tim Sherwood sys he wants to stay at Tottenham, despite his lack of an appearance in the first team this season and now he does not even make the reserve side.  Allegedly, the London Evening Standard says that Hoddle wanted to play him against Arsenal reserves on Monday, but the former Blackburn Rovers man said he wanted to give his knee more time to heal.
Youngster Tim Ford has had a trial with Cheltenham Town.

Tuesday  17.12.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Harry Redknapp was reported to have been at Stevenage last night to check on Les Ferdinand.  unfortunately, he will only have seen 22 minutes of his work before being sent off or violent conduct, which carries a three match ban which covers first team action too.
Simon Davies is being linked as the subject of a move by Liverpool.  Having slumped in recent weeks, they think that the Welshman will want to move to Anfield strengthen their midfield.
Spurs are believed to be in talks with Marcelo Salas' agent about a move to White Hart Lane for £6 million to be paid in instalments.  The Juventus striker has had limited chances to play and with Barcelona dropping out due to lack of finances, Tribal Football's site reveals that the Chilean hot-shot could come in during the January transfer window. (with thanks to Chloe Joseph for that story)
Anderlecht's South Korean striker Seol Ki-Hyeon has said h would love to play his football in England and Tottenham are one of the clubs reported to have watched him in the past, but West Ham United are rated as favourites to bring him to Blighty.
Watford have cancelled the contract of former Spurs keeper Espen Baardsen, who coincidentally was in the Spurs section of the crowd for Sunday's North London derby.
...and finally ... Newcastle United are trying to sign a player from Chinese side Dalian Shide.  He is called An Qi.  Clearly not a player to be sneezed at !!

Monday  16.12.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Tottenham's players have forgiven goalkeeper Kasey Keller for the infringement that lead to Arsenal's penalty yesterday.  Freund and Hoddle both agreed that the American keeper has been on top form and do not criticise him for the dive that brought Henry crashing to the ground, as if struck by a truck.
Bertrand Robert, the Montpellier midfielder is being courted by Tottenham according to rumours today.  He is the 19 year old brother of Laurent Robert, the Newcastle player and can play either attacking or defensive midfield.
Spurs are supposed to be interested in his team-mate Fode Mansare, a 21 year old Guinean striker.
And Spurs are supposedly ready to let Sergei Rebrov leave for just £1 million !!  January sales anyone ??

One possible venue for a ground move might be struck off for Tottenham, as West Ham United are being touted as possible tenants for the proposed Olympic stadium in Stratford, East London, should London's bid for the 2012 Games be successful.  Tottenham had been rumoured as being interested in the ground if it was in need of a tenant to make it viable.

Saturday  14.12.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

The Guardian newspaper today suggests that Arsenal might try and get Stephen Carr on the cheap in the summer, as Spurs have to make a decision on whether to cash in on a player who will go for free two years after that.  Arsene Wenger said it was not the right time to discuss the matter, but rumour has it that is what they intend to try come the end of the season.
The papers are again linking Spurs with a move for Sunderland's Kevin Phillips.  After a gesture he made in Monday's game and on the back of reports of the North-East club's big losses, the sale of players is seen as their salvation.  However, the club have said they do not want to sell the little striker as he could help them in staying up.
The "Lee Bowyer to Spurs" rumour gathers legs with a five year £70,000 a week contract believed to be in the offing, according to some stories.  One would hope that there is a "pay as you play" condition in the deal, as if he carries on with his outrageous indiscipline, he will be missing more often than not.  As it is we might pick him up with a European ban hanging over him after his latest incident, when he stamped on the head of Malaga's Geraldo in the UEFA Cup tie on Thursday.
Another story on TeamTalk claims that Gary Doherty's prospective loan deal could see him move to Ninian Park in exchange for 23 year old Welsh international defender Daniel Gabbidon.
Darren Anderton has shown that wishful thinking is not dead, when he told the Sporting Life site that he would never play for Arsenal.  He said that turning down Manchester United a few years back meant that the North London rivals would not tempt him to defect along the Seven Sisters Road.  Anderton said he is "Tottenham through and through" and has never wanted to leave and it would not feel right if he followed the example of a former team mate.
Christian Ziege is back in the German national squad for a friendly against a team of overseas players from the Bundesliga to raise money for the victims of this year's floods.
Spurs under-17s drew 1-1 with Ipswich Town at home this morning, with a goal from Iyad Ahmed in the last minute earning a point after Owen Price had been sent off for two bookable offences.
Spurs under-19s beat Ipswich Town 2-0 away thanks to goals from Michael Malcolm and Mark Hughes.

Friday  13.12.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Daniel Levy has stunned Spurs fans by stating in the London Evening Standard that the possibility of Tottenham sharing a ground with Arsenal could be a viable proposition.  He said that if it was in the club's and the fan's best interests he would consider it, although the club has no plans in that direction.  Why he would think the fans would go for it, I don't know.
To test the waters with the fans, there will be an on-line questionnaire on the club's website next week and a survey in the programme for the matches against Charlton Athletic on Boxing Day.
Levy went on to say that the club would consider using an existing facility and that Wembley could be an option.  While I would like to see Spurs back at Wembley, this wasn't actually what I had envisaged.  The chairman said that the Government's record on regeneration in the local area around White Hart Lane was not impressive and he was not optimistic of getting the necessary improvements to the area to expand the current ground to have a larger capacity.  He said the area had gone downhill and little had been done to stop the decline.  Levy pointed out that "Either there's going to be significant commitment or we're off."  Start packing the bags then.
The article also stated that Transport for London and London Underground will fund a feasibility study into whether they could transform the marshalling yards at Northumberland Park into a station on the Victoria Line. However, the time that this could take might be too long to keep Tottenham hanging on a promise of a tube link to the ground.
TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS : - Steffen Freund returns and will most probably find a place in the team, with Anderton or Redknapp making way for him.  Neil Sullivan might be back on the bench.  Bunjy is back after a one match suspension, but might have to settle for a place on the bench.
ARSENAL TEAM NEWS : - Patrick Vieira might miss the game with a groin injury, but you know Wenger and his crazy mind games.  Would you believe him ??  Edu, van Bronckhorst or Parlour will come in if the French midfielder does not play, while Keown might replace Cygan and Pires might be rested.  If Vieira misses the match, S. Cumball could be captain for the day.  He also has to choose between Seaman and Taylor in goal.
Daniel Levy told the London evening Standard that the deal with Rivaldo was a serious one and that he nearly succeeded until AC Milan came in with a "money no object" salary bid.  If another world star was available, Levy told the newspaper that Tottenham would go for them again as long as the commercial and playing strengths were there.
Planet Football carry a story supposedly from Levy, saying that no arrivals will come to the club in January.
Stephen Carr admitted that he is still not going flat out in the Tottenham team after being out for 18 months injured.  He said on the official site that hew ill get better with the more games he plays.
Cardiff City are keen to take Gary Doherty merely on loan now and manager Lennie Lawrence sees him as a centre half.  The former Luton man was handed his debut by Lawrence and is very well known to him.  Planet Football speculates that he might be used as bait for a move for striker Rob Earnshaw or at least a first option to purchase the Zambian forward.
Johnnie Jackson has returned to Tottenham after completing a three month loan spell at Swindon Town.
Meanwhile, Steven Ferguson is in demand at Motherwell, where Terry Butcher would like to keep him until the end of the season.

Chris Perry is the latest Spurs player to express concern about his inability to hold down a permanent place in the first team.  The defender said that he does not get picked even when there is a fully fit squad and with 18 months left on his contract he is worried that he might not be offered a new one.  Perry did acknowledge that the quality in the squad made it difficult to demand a place from the manager.
Rosario have said that they are in no hurry to sell Luciano Figueroa, the hot striker in Argentina at the moment.
Cardiff City are apparently keen on Gary Doherty for the £1 million we paid for him.
The FA Youth Cup Fourth Round tie against Swindon Town will be played at White Hart Lane on Wednesday 15th January 2003 with a 7.00 p.m. kick off unless there is a FA Cup Third Round replay against SCBC, in which case the Swindon tie will be put back 24 hours.
Ben Bowditch played for England Under-20s against Switzerland at Upton Park tonight in the 0-2 defeat.  Rohan Ricketts was a second half substitute for England.

Teddy Sheringham and Jamie Redknapp have called on their colleagues at Spurs to pull together and support the manager's ideas on squad rotation.  They feel that with the hectic Christmas schedule coming up they will need all the fit players available and therefore, those who have said they are unhappy at not getting a game should be prepared to put their boots on.  It is a bit rich coming from Sheringham after his reaction to being substituted on Sunday.
Matthew Etherington hopes that rest will cure the bone bruising he suffered to his ankle in the Worthington Cup tie at Burnley.
Romanian forward Adrian Ilie of Alaves is being linked with a move to Tottenham once more.
Spurs are also supposed to be in the hunt for Real Madrid's French midfielder Claude Makelele, along with Manchester United, Manchester City and Middlesbrough.  Internazionale and Juventus are also keen on the player whose contract talks with Real have collapsed.

Monday  9.12.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Daniel Levy is trying to force the Government's hand into regenerating the area around White Hart Lane by threatening to move away from the current stadium.  He said he was not willing to wait forever for the necessary infrastructure to be put in place around the ground and that he has instructed agents to look for suitable sites to move the club's base to.
Glenn Hoddle revealed that the club want to bring someone in during the January transfer window opening, but they will have to move players on first and they were working hard to do that.
Robbie Keane is to face an FA inquiry over his goal celebrations in front of the visiting West Bromwich Albion fans yesterday.  His cartwheel has been reported by the match referee.  Hopefully someone might look again at Henry's celebration at Highbury a couple of weeks ago, as this would surely fall into the same category.

Ben Thatcher has said how disappointed he is at not being able to break into the Tottenham first team.  The left sided defender is angry that he is not figuring in the side and that he is not able to "pin down" (not a good choice of words really) the manager to ask why.  He told Planet Football that if it continued, he would not sit tight and see out his contract picking up his salary, but would want a move to get to play for a side who wanted him.

Spurs are being said to have a £12 million bid for occasional Liverpool striker Emile Heskey ready for the January transfer window.  Arggggggggh !!  Luckily, Houllier has said that Heskey is not going anywhere.  Hurrah !!  Hoddle has also denied the story, saying the £75 million raised by financiers is for building the academy and the ground extensions.
The official Spurs site carries an item clarifying that Teddy Sheringham does not hate Arsenal.  Does that make it clear ??
The site also reveals that Anthony Gardner will not need surgery on his knee, which has been diagnosed as just wear and tear, which will require a couple of weeks rest before he can resume training.
Today's clubs being linked with Les Ferdinand are Portsmouth and West Ham United.  Glenn Hoddle is believed to be ready to let the forward go if someone will pay £500,000 to take him off our hands.

Gus Poyet said he will probably stop playing at the end of his current contract which expires in the summer of 2004, but he would love to steer Spurs into Europe before then.
Although he is being allowed to leave Tottenham should the right offer be received, it looks like Les Ferdinand will not end up at Ibrox as Glasgow Rangers' manager Alex McLeish is concentrating on bringing in defenders rather than forwards.
Reserve forward Lee Barnard has returned to the club, after spending a month on loan at Exeter City.
