Spurs started with a youthful team thanks to the number of players away on international duty and out on loan.  However, Gilberto and Ricardo Rocha gave the side experience and the youngsters enjoyed the opportunity to feature in the second string.

Jake Livermore and Ryan Mason linked up well through the middle only to be denied as goalkeeper Parish dived out at Mason's feet to thwart him in the tenth minute.  It was Livermore who was next to be disappointed, as Parish tipped over his shot after Gilberto had dinked a ball over the top.  Tottenham came even closer in the 14th minute, when Mason's corner found Kudos Oyenuga and his volley was hacked off the line by Nicky Shorey. 

Ben Alnwick's first action came in the 15th minute, as he beat away Hogg's drive from 25 yards and then five minutes later, he was alert to rush quickly out to block Delfouneso as he broke through.  In the 22nd minute, the Spurs keeper denied the same striker with a dive to his right to stop his effort after he got past a couple of defenders and into the area.  After another five minutes, Villa could have taken the lead, as Collins ran through past the Spurs defence and avoiding an offside flag, but with more time than he thought, he smashed a shot way over the bar.

After 28 minutes, the visitors took the lead when Adam Smith went in for a tackle with Hofbauer after a throw-in, but the ball dropped for the Villa man to strike a shot past Alnwick from 12 yards out.

Five minutes before the break, Ryan Mason hit a shot on goal, which was blocked, but seizing on the rebound, Mtandari took the ball past Baker, who brought him down for a penalty.  Mason stepped up to calmly knock the ball high into the net past Parish to equalise.  Just before the half-time whistle, Villa had a chance to regain the lead but Collins volleyed wide from Shorey's cross when in the six yard box.

Twelve minutes into the second half, Jacques Maghoma played a cheeky back-heel through for Gilberto and as the Brazilian ran into the box, he was felled by Roome for Tottenham's second spot-kick.  This time Maghoma got up to take the penalty and his shot was palmed away by Parish, but the referee demanded a re-take as the keeper had moved too far off his line.  Taking the second attempt, Maghoma sent the goalie the wrong way to put Tottenham 2-1 ahead in the 58th minute.

After this the game was scrappy and the only other chance that arose fell to Villa, a quarter of an hour before the end of the game, when Shorey fed Delfouneso, but he was denied by Alnwick's feet and the score-line ended 2-1 in Tottenham's favour.

Marlon Harewood had the first shooting chance of the game, but pulled his effort wide of Ben Alnwick's goal in the fifth minute and Herd shot across the Spurs goal with 18 minutes passed.  It was Herd who gave Aston Villa the lead when a Steiber corner came low into the box and Herd hit a 10 yard shot that Alnwick saved, then came off David Hutton by the post and just crossed the line in the 23rd minute.

The goal gave Villa fresh impetus and they ht the bar with a 25 yard shot from Isaiah Osbourne after 29 minutes and although Hutton hit a 33rd minute shot that deflected off Herd into Parish's arms, former Spurs winger Wayne Routledge could not manage a shot on target in the 42nd minute, as Ricardo Rocha successfully pushed him wide of the area.  In the last minute of the half, Harewood was put through 35 yards out, but Dorian Dervite managed to get back to challenge and put him off, as the shot went wide.  In added time, Kevin Prince Boateng fired in a shot from 30 yards that caused Parish some concern, but it flew wide.

After the break, Spurs strove to get back into the game, with Taarabt and Hutton setting up Boateng again, but his shot went a couple of yards wide from the left corner of the area in the 54th minute, while Hutton was once more involved as he ran at the Villa defence and hit a right foot shot just over from 18 yards out in the 56th minute.  Three minutes later, Barcham and Taarabt linked well to allow the French midfielder to fire in a shot from 25 yards out that went wide of the target.  Just after the hour, a scramble around the edge of the home box saw the ball fall to Andy Barcham ,who was lining up a shot from 16 yards out, when Carlos Cuellar dived in to block his drive.

Villa tried to hit back and Osbourne won the ball from Boateng, played a one-two with Steiber and took aim, but his shot lacked power and was comfortable for Alnwick to save, then, with fifteen minutes left, Taarabt broke away, but similarly, he failed to get a clean connection and Parish was not unduly troubled by the shot. 

The game fizzled out towards the end and Herd had a shot wide of the mark in the 82nd minute, as Villa played out the match to secure the three points.

Danny Rose almost opened the scoring in the first minute, but could not get enough on his shot from Joe Martin's pass, then Dean Parrett made Thomas Sorenson dive to save and Adel Taarabt's 50 yard run just failed to pick out Simon Dawkins.  However, it was in the fifth minute that Tottenham broke through, with Taarabt crafting a ball into Dawkins' good run and he took the ball past Sorensen before sliding the ball into the net.

It was nearly 2-0 in the ninth minute, with Pekhart ruled offside as he put in Dawkins' flick on from a Parrett cross and then three minutes later, Pekhart knocked the ball down for Taarabt, who sliced his shot horribly, but straight to Rose, who struck a volley wide.  The Czech striker was proving a handful and one run alongside Lund ended with both players falling in the box, but the referee waved play on. 

It took until the 20th minute for Villa to have a scoring opportunity, when ex-Spur Wayne Routledge crossed to Patrik Berger, whose shot from 18 yards out was pushed wide by David Button.  The same combination linked up five minutes later to provide Berger with a shooting opportunity that went just wide.  But with 32 minutes on the clock, Rose beat Lichaj for pace and Lund slid in to foul the winger, conceding a penalty in the process.  Adel Taarabt stepped up to chip the ball straight down the middle as Sorensen dived to his left and make it 2-0.

A rapid break seven minutes before the break saw Joe Martin find Dean Parrett and his long pass picked out Danny Rose, who outstripped the Villa defence for pace and his finishing shot beat Sorensen, but also the beat the far post.  A minute before the break, Villa had a chance, with Clancy putting Routledge through, but Button raced from his line to smother the shot. 

The second half started with Spurs on the attack.  Martin curled a free-kick on target from 25 yards out, but it was comfortable for Sorensen to take, before Taarabt ran at Hogg and fired a low shot that was saved by the visiting keeper.  It was Button's turn to be called into action in the 75th minute, as Berger's corner was met by Lund's head and Button reacted sharply to keep the ball out.

In the next attack, Spurs went three up with Martin, Cian Hughton and substitute Kyle Fraser-Allen producing space for Hughton to cross and Lund tried to stop the ball, but prodded past his own goalie, leaving Pekhart the simple task of knocking the ball over the line to make certain.

In the last ten minutes, Villa pressed to get back into the game and Salifou produced an acrobatic overhead kick that dropped onto the roof of the net, while Albrighton got onto a short back-pass from Ricardo Rocha and almost rounded Button, but the keeper blocked his effort on goal.  In added time Berger played a low cross through the six yard box without anyone getting a touch on it and Forrester hit a long range shot well wide as Spurs held out for their victory.

A dull first half saw the teams turn around score-less, but when winger Danny Rose burst in the penalty area to be felled by Chris Herd, Tom Huddlestone stepped up to the spot to fire home the penalty off the underside of the crossbar on 55 minutes.

The lead was very short-lived with Tobias Mikaelsson knocking the ball home from a yard out to level the scores and then Moustapha Salifou drove into the Spurs half to set up Mikaelsson for his second with a firm shot, before a penalty nine minutes from time gave Marlon Harewood the opportunity to put the game beyond Tottenham's reach.
